Self-made signage. Citizens of Kampung Papringan, Yogyakarta, initiated an effort to help any bypasser from getting lost in their environment, by erecting their self-made traffic signposts (03/08). Departing from the winding “jalan kampung” (kampong narrow streets) as a fact, regular citizens have proven once again that they can be better designers, compared to the professionals. Honest semantics were then born in these signages' physical manifestation: short in size, made from affordable materials, and imbued with contextually appropriate contents. So, what kind of virtue do professional designers hold in our contemporary culture then? Danu Primanto | November 2011
