WRITER’S GUIDANCE

WRITER’S GUIDANCE

ARTICLES FOR THE FOCUS

We determine the theme for the Focus, which will consist of five articles per publication. Based on the chosen theme, we select the contributors and resource persons with whom we will work. However, we remain open to the possibility of collaborating with you in the publication of each of our new edition. In 2010, we will publish two editions of Focus following the results of our research programs.

ARTICLES FOR THE ARTICLE PAGE

Karbon
journal provides a space for you who wish to write articles that are not related to the theme of our Focus. We will publish such writing on the Article page, while remaining open to the possibility that your article might serve as a source of inspiration for us as we discuss about potential themes for our Focus page. In 2010, we plan to publish a total of twenty-two articles between February and December 2010. We will publish two articles every month.

ABOUT WRITING FOR THE ARTICLE AND FOCUS PAGES

All articles on Karbon journal will be bound by the copyleft licensing scheme. This means that your article(s) might be reproduced or copied, as long as the copies and reproductions are bound by the same copyleft scheme. We hope that you will have no problem about this because we believe that information should be free and open to everyone.

  1. You can use articles on the Karbon journal as long as you use them for educational purposes and not for commercial ones. Please cite the name of our publication, the Karbon journal; the title of the article; the name of the writer; and the date of publication.
  2. We focus on statements, arguments, ideas, and reflections in articles that are based on day-to-day phenomena, with strong, clear, and tidy underlying thoughts. We discourage superfluous expositions of information and theories, as well as extravagant references. Please keep the focus on the issue at hand.
  3. We like articles that are friendly, narrative, communicative, and light—and even humorous and witty if necessary—which are clear and easy to understand. Replace the academic terms with equal terms that are more familiar to the audience.
  4. All supporting quotes and data mentioned in your article must be legally acquired. Personal quotes must be accompanied by written permission(s) from the person(s) quoted.
  5. We will provide an official letter of duty if you need it for your writing purposes.
  6. We prioritize on the theme and content of the article. We do not have any problem if your article has been published in another media; we will, however, reduce the payment for your article. We will further elaborate on this matter. To submit an article that has been published as a part of a book, please obtain a re-publication permit from your publisher.
  7. The editors have the right to edit your article without changing its meaning. We will conduct the whole editing process in consultation with you.
  8. Please mention thoroughly the sources of your quotes and references in the footnotes. If your sources are online media, please include the URL address and the date on which you access the site.
  9. The article should have no more than 3,000 words, excluding the footnotes. If you exceed that 3,000-word limit, we will reconsider it and discuss the issue with you.
  10. Please include supplementary data in the form of photos with the resolution of 300 dpi, accompanied by supporting information. Do not forget to include a brief biography of yourself, in the format and style that you can read on Our Contributors page. As this is an online journal, you can keep on updating your profile by sending us the latest information about you.
  11. Please send us information on your bank account. If your article is published for our Focus, you will receive a payment of Rp750,000. If it is published on the Essay page, you will receive a payment of Rp500,000. For previously-published articles, you will receive Rp300,000. You will receive the payment on the 27th of the month of publication.
  12. We might use your article(s) for our print publications (i.e. books) but we cannot give you any additional payment. We are planning to publish a selection of articles in a book. All pertinent information about the re-publication of the articles in the form of books will be given to you and we will confirm it further with you. We will give you a copy of the book for each of the published article, and invite you to the launching of the book. We can only give you some additional payment for you as a speaker if we invite you to be a speaker in our event(s).
  13. Parts of your article—be it the one published on the Articles, Focus, Photo, or Our Movie House page—can be quoted, without giving you any additional payment, in our non-book print publications such as T-shirts, postcards, stickers, or advertisements on other print media. The text quoted might be in the form of a sentence or a paragraph that we consider best represent the image of Karbonjournal.org that we wish to promote in such publications. We will give you a copy of each print material as our token of gratitude.
  14. You can re-publish your article in other media—whether on the online or print media. For archiving purposes, please inform us about such re-publications.
  15. You can submit your manuscript and data to editor@karbonjournal.org

ABOUT PHOTOS
You can send us latest pictures of your cities or towns in Indonesia. The Photo page is intended to show the myriad changes taking place in a range of cities—whether it is about old buildings that have been turned into commercial buildings, new visual phenomena on the street, strange-looking sculptures, weird text on public vehicles, informal professions found on the city, and other strange, funny, and illogical things that take place in the urban space. The presence of signs on the picture that refer to the city where the photo is taken will be appreciated.

  1. We expect the picture to record what has not been there before but exists today in the city, as a record of the latest development in the urban visual realm and the phenomenon of the city.
  2. The picture should record unique things or something that should not have taken place in the city.
  3. The picture can also record the things that have not changed since time immemorial, while they should actually change. This serves as a reminder that there are still many unsolved problems in our cities.
  4. Through the picture, the photographer can interpret the urban phenomena that at a glance seem to be nothing problematic, things that most people might not notice.
  5. The picture should be taken by someone who actually resides in the city. This is an important prerequisite, to avoid the perspective of exoticism in viewing the urban phenomena.
  6. Changes in one city might differ from those in other cities. Something might be commonplace in one town, but novel in another. It is still important to record such changes so that we can eventually be able to see the chronology and distribution of changes or problems from one city to another.
  7. Please submit recent pictures, or please ascertain that what is recorded on the picture still exists at the time of the submission.
  8. The picture should be in landscape format and have adequate resolution so that it can be published in good quality on the site.
  9. Please include the location and date when the picture was taken, and supporting information in one to two paragraphs so that our editors can publish the necessary information on the Photo page. Please send us your profile, a copy of your proof of ID, and your bank details.
  10. We will publish four pictures in a month. Photos will be published every Monday.
  11. If we select your photos, you will receive a payment of Rp100,000. You will receive the payment on the 27th of the month of publication. Please send your photo to: editor@karbonjournal.org
